Walleye 101" Trophy Hunt 2004
Huron, Ohio Nov 4-7 2004
The first annual "Walleye 101 Trophy Hunt" was held in early November 2004 in Huron, Ohio. Our three day fishing adventure saw 65 anglers join together to increase our fishing knowledge, learn from each other and hopefully catch some monster fall eyes from Lake Erie.
The trip got off to a slow start when a small craft advisory greeted the anglers on the morning of day 1. With the day's fishing cancelled, most anglers took short road trips to the various bait shops in the area. Some took the time off to ready their boats for the next two days, catch up on some sleep and even tune their crankbaits in the hotel pool! The afternoon ended with a very informal "seminar" in the lobby and the evening culminated in a great pizza party.
Luckily Day 2 dawned with clear skies and low winds so the "Walleye 101" armada launched from Holiday Harbor Marina and headed out to catch some fish. And catch some fish we did! The high winds from the previous 2 days had muddied the water a little, but anglers who found clean water soon began catching walleye. By the end of the day over 150 walleye had been caught by our gang. The largest of these fish pushed 10 pounds with a lot of fish in the 5-8 pound class caught. The highlight of the day was the evening fish fry held in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn. Everyone pitched in to help clean, prepare, bread, cook and serve the meal. The clear sky and crisp autumn air was the perfect setting to enjoy this great meal and new fishing buddies we had all made.
Sunday, Day 3, was a little windier than the previous day, but the fish were still biting! Another 50 or so walleye were caught before most of the boats started to head back home around 1:00 pm. Most headed back to the hotel to clean the days catch, and we all realized how much fun we had! Everyone is looking forward to next year!
