"Walleye 101" Trophy Hunt 2005 Week 2

Huron, Ohio Nov 10-13 2005

Week 2 of the 2005 "Walleye 101 Trophy Hunt" started with great expectations.  Just a few days earlier week 1 had ended with over 300 fish caught with 2 over 11 pounds.  A strong north wind had been blowing for the past 2 days when the anglers checked into the Huron Comfort Inn on Thursday night and the effect it would have on our 3 day fishing adventure were not yet known.

Day 1 started with a SW wind around 15 mph-definitely fishable on Lake Erie!  11 boats holding 27 anglers launched out of Holiday Harbor Marina and began the quest for Lake Erie monsters.  The north winds had muddied the water slightly, but there were still plenty of fish showing up on the sonar units.  Unfortunately many of the fish had dropped down in the water column and were reluctant to bite.  At the end of the day we could only muster up about 30 walleye for the day and were anxious for day 2 to come.

The weather for day 2 stayed about the same and so did the fishing.  Slow was the name of the game for most boats with the fish still low in the water and lethargic.   Early in the afternoon some fish started to turn on and some of the boats cashed in.  Every boat caught at least 1 fish and we ended the day with a nice round 50 walleye for the group.

The end of day 2 is always the highlight of the trip.  The now traditional fish fry is always a great hit and this one was no different.  As always everyone pitched in to help make this an enjoyable evening.  The weather again cooperated, allowing us time to enjoy the meal and talking fishing with our new found friends.

Day 3 surprised us with gale warnings in effect, bringing winds of up to 40 mph.  Even though they were from the south and some of our water were slightly protected from the wind, the gale warning caused cancellation of day 3.  This was the third time in three Trophy Hunts we have had to cancel a day of fishing.  Lake Erie in November can be a little cranky!

Hopefully everyone enjoyed their trip even with the slow fishing and bad weather on day 3 all are looking forward to 2006!
