Tying open water spinners

Hopefully the following pictures and descriptions will help you learn how to tie your own open water crawler harnesses.  I use #8 round treble hooks on the back and a red #2 hook with turned up eye (octopus or walleye hook) on the front.  Beads are 6mm and I use 7 beads on most harnesses.  A quick change clevis and quality swivel finish off the rig.  My favorite line for harnesses in Berkley Vanish Leader Material in 15lb.  If you can't find the leader material, use Vanish 17lb line.  Remember to lubricate all your knots before pulling them tight, especially when using Fluorocarbon line like Vanish.  I tie my harnesses about 48-60" long.

Lance's favorite spinner colors!

Step1 Cut off a piece of line about 6" longer than you want the finished harness to be.  Insert line through the eye of the treble hook (#8 round bend)
Step 2 Holding the line on the flat part of the treble hook shank, wrap the standing end of the line around the shank 10 times, working from the hook eye to the points.
Step 3 Holding the wraps tight against the shank, run the standing line through the eye of the treble hook.
Step 4 Pull the loops tight to the eye of the treble hook
Step 5 Run the standing line through the eye of the front hook, coming from the back of the hook
Step 6 Holding the line on the single hook shank, wrap the standing end of the line around the shank 10 times, working from the hook eye to the points.  Hold the wraps tight and pull the loops tight against the hook eye.
Step 7 Thread on beads and clevis and finish with a high quality swivel.
