2009 Walleye Education Weekend
"Spring Walleye"
Lake Erie, Huron, Ohio April 23-26, 2009
Windy weather and dirty water made the 2009 version of the Spring Walleye Education Weekend on Lake Erie one of the most challenging ever. Cold, dirty spring water and walleye just off the spawn made for tough fishing, but the Walleye 101 gang worked hard through the tough conditions and caught some fish when most others where not. Typical spring locations around the Bass Island area produced, but the wind made it tough to get to the fish. Speed control was difficult in the high waves, making spinner fishing productive for those who could control their boats. Some new things were learned on this trip despite the tough conditions. Schools of good walleye were located near Huron, some just outside the pier heads. Some good fish were caught near Huron in shallow water on jigs-something to try next spring. All in all spirits stayed high despite the tough fishing, and another great trip is in the books.
A special thanks to all who made this trip one of our best. As always, sponsors Traxstech and Warrior Lures were on hand to help with boat rigging and custom painted spoons and blades. Members of the Fish Huron Committee made us all feel very welcome. Jay Enzor at J n J Harbor Drive Thru was the official Tackle Store of Walleye 101 on this trip and did a great job of providing our group with everything we needed to have a successful trip! Jay and his crew worked hard every day to give us a great place to clean fish, take pictures and gather in the afternoon. The folks at the Huron Microtel again came through with great lodging for our group, opening a week early to accommodate our trip. As always thanks to all of you who attended and all the staff members and volunteers.
This year our fish fry was taken over by the community, with Mesenberg Catering supplying the fish and doing all the cooking, and Berardi's Restaurant providing their famous french fries, cole slaw and rolls for the fish fry. It is a great honor to have the local businesses get behind what Walleye 101 is doing.
